If These Halls Could Talk

"If These Halls Could Talk" is an oral history project that captures the powerful stories of 21 alumni from Jackson Price Burley High School in Charlottesville, Virginia.  From its opening in 1951 during the state of Virginia's passive resistance to school desegregation, to its closing during integration of schools in 1967, Burley High School created an enriching and enduring educational experience. Through a series of candid interviews, former students recount their experiences within this historic institution, shedding light on how they navigated the challenges of segregation while excelling in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities.

The project reveals a deeply connected community where students, teachers and administrators forged strong, supportive relationships. Despite the oppressive societal constraints of the time, Burley High School thrived as a nurturing environment where students pursued excellence. Participants speak fondly of their time at Burley, recalling their dominance in team sports, participation in club and other activities, and their dedication in academic pursuits. These accounts highlight how the school served as a sanctuary, fostering a sense of belonging and pride among its students.

The stories illustrate how Burley's closely knit community developed an unforgettable space for learning. Teachers and administrators are remembered not just for their roles in the classroom but as mentors and role models who profoundly impacted students' lives. The sense of family and mutual respect permeated the halls, creating a legacy that extended beyond graduation. Alumni of Burley High School went on to become influential figures in various fields, carrying with them the lessons and values instilled during their formative years at the school.
