I’m still looking for a photo of Mrs. Miller, who was my second grade teacher, and she was like an extended grandmother. She was white. She was most instrumental. There were only two Blacks in the whole building — Mr. Swift and Ms. Brine — and one worked in the cafeteria and one was a custodian, and they were like extended family members. But Mrs. Miller was like an extended grandmother because she would — me not knowing until later years — she would send little notes home in my backpack to my mother to share the type of day that I had.
